The Thief Lord's lesson on how to Dream like a Child

One of my favorite children’s novel is called The Thief Lord’ by Cornelia Funke. It has so many profound lessons within it on human interactions and our ability to appreciate our space in life and how to dream big. I gained so much from reading this book and would love to share today a particular part of it that really struck a chord with me.

‘The Thief Lord‘ is about a gang of orphaned children who live together in a dilapadated movie theatre in Venice. They pick pocket to get by and are under the guidance of a boy named Scipio who calls himself the Thief Lord. Scipio, in actual fact is the son of a very wealthy man who has no time for him and treats him as nothing more than a nusiance and an inconvienence to his busy schedule. Scipio longs for a better life and takes the children under his wing, pretending that he too is an orphan. He longs to be an adult so that he can have the power to make his own choices and live life the way he would like to, and to escape his unhappy home life. He thinks life as an adult would be so exciting as you would have complete control over it and could do anything you wanted.

The Thief Lord’s wish is granted through way of a magical carousel ride, whereby Scipio turns into a young man. He had many hopes and dreams of what life would offer him as a grown up but he soon starts to feel disappointed as life as an adult just didn’t amount to the fun and adventure he thought it would be. After several weeks of trying to find his place as an young man he runs into his adult friend Victor and the following conversation occurs:

Victor?’ he asked,’ “What do adults do all day?”

‘Work,” Victor answered, “eat, shop, pay bills, use the phone, read newspapers, drink coffee, sleep.”
Scipio sighed, “Not really very exciting,” he muttered, resting his arms on the cold stone of the parapet.

“Well” Victor grunted. But he couldn’t think of anything else to say.

“I’ll think of something,” Scipio said, determination ringing in his voice. “Something exciting and adventurous. Maybe I should go to the airport and get on a plane. Or maybe I could become a treasure hunter, I could also learn to drive…….

This was my favorite part of the book as it just stopped me in my tracks and made me think deeply about life as an adult viewed through the eyes of a child; a child who had high visions and dreams of what it was supposed to be like- a carefree life of fun and adventure, a life of endless possibilites.
How many of us reading this now find that their life has become a series of repititve, mundane tasks? So many adults are just going through the motions of the day. We just get up on autopilot and perform the same tasks day in, day out with no thought as to what we’re doing and why. We just do it as we’ve always done it, we are just operating on survivial mode.
Have you become stuck in a serious rut? Have you become a boring, lifeless adult? Are you like Victor and can’t even think of a decent response as to why your life as an adult is not exciting? Have you forgotten how to dream like a child? Have you forgotten how you once viewed being an adult as the time when you could do anything you wanted? When the world would become your oyster? A time when there would be no limitations placed on you?
For you to be a success in life you have to get back to the childlike soul within you. You need to get back to the Scipio that exists within you. That child is still there, the child with the thirst for adventure and excitement. Imagine that you are that child that has suddenly turned into an adult. You have the freedom and the ability to make the choices of your desires as an adult but now within you you possess the childlike belief and vision that its all possible. That you can be, do, have whatever you want.
Close your eyes now and imagine that you are Scipio having the conversation with Victor. Feel the innocence, wonder and vision he possesses deep in your core. Feel that sense of freedom and the excitement of a life of endless possibilites spread through your body. There are no limitations to what you can do. Let that child in you run free again and write down what you say to Victor, what would you do right now to make your life exciting? Dream big and live with the spirit of a child, list all the things you want to do when you become an adult.
